α-galactosidase (α-galactosidase, α-gal, EC 3.2.1.22) is an exoglycosidase that catalyzes the hydrolysis of α-galactosidic bonds. Because it can decompose melibiose, it is also called melibiase, which catalyzes the hydrolysis of α-galactosidic bonds. This feature makes it useful for improving and eliminating anti-nutritional components in feed and soy-based foods. In addition, it can realize B→O blood type conversion in the medical field, prepare universal blood, and play an important role in the enzyme replacement therapy of Fabry disease. α-galactosidase, can also act on complex polysaccharides, glycoproteins, and glycosphingoses containing α-galactosidic bonds. Some α-galactosidases can also transgalactosylate when the substrate concentration is highly enriched, and this feature can be used for the synthesis of oligosaccharides and the preparation of cyclodextrin derivatives. The development of neutrophil or pH-stable α-galactosidase and the search for microorganisms or plants with high enzyme production have become research hotspots in recent years. Many heat-resistant α-galactosidases have also gradually aroused the widespread interest of scientists due to their particularity, expecting to use their thermal stability to play a greater use value in the industry and to show a wider range of applications in the fields of technology, technology, and medicine.

Function:

1) This enzyme is a homodimeric glycoprotein that hydrolyses the terminal α-galactosyl moieties from glycolipids and glycoproteins. It predominantly hydrolyzes ceramide trihexoside, and it can catalyze the hydrolysis of melibiose into galactose and glucose.

Application:

1) Applications of the enzyme in the area of biomedicine include therapeutic advances in the treatment of Fabry disease, blood group conversion, and removal of α-gal type immunogenic epitopes in xenotransplantation. With considerable biotechnological applications, this enzyme has been vastly commercialized and holds greater future prospects.
