What is the Blue Spirulina Powder?
Blue Spirulina Powder, also known as Phycocyanin powder，is a natural light blue colorant extracted from blue-green algae (spirulina). It has good water solubility, alcohol and lipid insolubility. Phycocyanin makes up 20% of protein. Derived from C-phycocyanin and allophycocyanin, phycocyanin has fluorescent properties and phycocyanin is selective for which cells it attaches to, which makes it easy to track.
Phycocyanin is a pigment-protein complex from the light-harvesting phycobiliprotein family, along with allophycocyanin and phycoerythrin. It is an accessory pigment to chlorophyll. All phycobiliproteins are water-soluble, so they cannot exist within the membrane like carotenoids can. In addition to pigments, phycocyanin is a major source of natural plant protein.
