Potassium Iodide is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula KI. This white salt is the most commercially significant iodide compound. It is less hygroscopic (absorbs water less readily) than sodium iodide, making it easier to work with. Potassium Iodide occurs naturally in kelp.Kelp's iodide content can range from 89 µg/g to 8165 µg/g.

Function:

1) The compound is required by the body to make thyroid hormones.
2) The major uses of potassium iodide include nutritional supplements in animal feeds. It is also used medicinally in tablets and also fins application in hair dyes.
3) Potassium Iodide is sometimes added in small quantities to table salt for idolization. This crystalline salt is also used as a fluorescence quenching agent in biomedical research because of collisional quenching by its iodide ion.

Application:

1) Commonly used as analytical reagents, and also used in the preparation of photographic photosensitive emulsifiers and in the pharmaceutical industry
2) Used in photosensitive emulsion, soap, lithography, organic synthesis, medicine, food additives, etc.
3) Potassium iodide is a permitted food iodine fortifier. It can be used for table salt, the dosage is 30-70mg/kg; the dosage in infant food is 0.3-0.6mg/kg.
4) Potassium iodide is an allowable food iodine fortifier.
